A Volunteer’s Passion for People and Painting the Town

Last year at Neighborhood Housing Services’ Paint The Town™ Paint Distribution Day, I briefly met a woman named Angel, who seemed to have a passion for the revitalization event.  I saw and heard the name “Angel” multiple times over the past year at the NHS office, and wanted to learn more about this woman, who I found out, is one of our most dedicated volunteers.

A Little Library with a Big Mission

These words from a teenage girl are the inspiration for many world changers, including 17 year old, Kristen Norton, a junior at Boise’s Sage International School. This high schooler recently decided to start making her own impact on the world by creating an inexpensive way to help Neighborhood Housing Services’ low-income residents easily access books and build their reading skills. She calls it the Little Library.

Celebrating Paint The Town’s Success

It has been said that, “Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.” Thousands of people contributed to the success of Neighborhood Housing Services’ Paint The Town™ event this past weekend – giving of their time, money or expertise to help paint and revitalize the houses of low-income homeowners, many of them senior or disabled, within our community. We are extremely grateful for this outpouring of support from our volunteers, sponsors, and donors as they joined efforts to make a difference within our neighborhoods.

NHS Kicks Off NeighborWorks Week By Painting The Town

One of the greatest social needs is to feel like we belong – that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves.  Saturday, June 7, 2014 marks Neighborhood Housing Services’ 32nd annual Paint The Town™ community volunteer event which is our way of participating in National NeighborWorks Week.  From June 7-15th, NHS joins over 200 other NeighborWorks America® organizations across our country with a week of community revitalization activities to foster positive changes within our neighborhoods, and your support makes you a part of this giant effort to make healthier and more sustainable communities.

Ella's Story - A Paint The Town Success

Ask any volunteer for the Neighborhood Housing Services program, Paint The Town, ™ and they will tell you how rewarding the experience is for them. It’s hard not to get emotional as you watch a senior or disabled homeowner’s face light up as they see the finished product of their freshly painted home. Over the past 31 years, we have seen many touching stories where this event has improved the quality of life of deserving people. And Ella’s story is one that exemplifies the purpose of Paint The Town™ – a story of neighbors and community members giving back to a hardworking, 88 year old woman when she could not physically or financially paint her home.

Paint The Town 2013 Report Available

Paint The Town™ 2013 was a great success and Neighborhood Housing Services is excited to share the highlights of the great community impact this program has made in the Treasure Valley. On June 8th, 65 teams painted 58 homes, volunteering over 7200 hours in order to complete the revitalization projects.

'Idaho Gives' $4,625 to NHS and Paint The Town

Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) would like to thank Idaho and the generous donors who participated in Idaho Gives on May 2, 2013.  NHS participated in this one day, online giving campaign to support Paint The Town.  A total of 74 donors donated $4,625 to buy buckets of paint for the valley-wide event, taking place June 8, 2013. The paint will be used to revitalize homes for senior or disabled neighbors throughout Southwest Idaho.

IDAHO GIVES to Local Nonprofits May 2, 2013

Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) will participate in a state-wide giving day on May 2, 2013 called Idaho Gives. This online fundraising effort will raise over $500,000 for hundreds of Idaho nonprofit organizations in one day. From midnight -11:59pm a share of every dollar raised by Idaho nonprofits will be matched with funds from the Idaho Gives award pool. In addition, the top five organizations with the most unique donors will receive bonus grants.
