NHS Highlights Acquisition & Rehabilitation Program

You may be familiar with our annual community volunteer events, Paint The Town™ and Rake Up Boise™, but did you know that Neighborhood Housing Services has an Acquisition and Rehabilitation of Single Family Homes Program too?

What We Do

NHS acquires and rehabilitates single family homes, and offers them for sale to qualified low- to moderate-income families – giving them the opportunity to utilize our Homeownership Counseling and Lending Programs if they need assistance.

The improvements we make to the properties are made not only with safety and comfort in mind, but also to increase sustainability of the home and reduce utility costs too.  We want our homes to be affordable to purchase and to live in.

Before & After

Why We Do It

Since Idaho is one of the lowest ranked states for average annual wage, per-capita income and wage increases, there is a great need for affordable housing.  Many prospective buyers have been squeezed out of the home-buying market by investors with full price cash offers.  In addition, many potential buyers are unable to meet the strict underwriting criteria to get a loan or provide a down payment.

This program gives Idaho families and individuals a chance to purchase a house – near shopping, schools, and services – that they are proud to call home.  Through this Acquisition and Rehabilitation Program, we are revitalizing and stabilizing Boise-Nampa MSA neighborhoods – often rehabilitating foreclosed properties that have not been maintained for several months.

Updates We Make

NHS purchases homes that often need extensive repair and updating, and we incorporate as many energy-saving upgrades as our budget allows, including:

  • Windows
  • Insulation
  • Light fixtures
  • Energy-efficient appliances
  • Plumbing, heating, and electrical systems

Our Progress

Since the inception of our Acquisition and Rehabilitation Program in August 2012, we have acquired and turned over 7 properties to families, with 3 additional homes either in the process of rehabilitation or on the market.

How You Can Get Involved

There are two main ways you can help our Acquisition and Rehabilitation Program right now:

  • Refer homes that we can purchase and update.
  • Spread the word that our beautiful, newly-rehabilitated home in Meridian is ready for a homeowner. Qualified applicants can receive $21,000 in grant funds for the down payment and closing cost assistance. Click here for more pictures.
