Get Ready to Give, Idaho

Did you know that Idaho is the 6th most charitable state in the U.S.?  According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Idahoans give 6.4% of our discretionary income to charities, and you have the opportunity to make a difference in your favorite program and to maintain this distinguished ranking by participating in Idaho Gives.

For a full 24 hours on May 1st, you have the chance to support funding to your favorite nonprofits for the 2nd annual Idaho Gives  – a one day online giving event.  Participating nonprofits have the opportunity to win cash prizes based on the number of donors supporting their cause.  As you consider which organizations to contribute to on that day, here are 5 reasons why you should give to Neighborhood Housing Services:

1.  NHS helps low – to moderate – income Idahoans. We are committed to providing low- to moderate – income (LMI) Idahoans with affordable housing options through our 12 programs and services.

2.  NHS helps senior and disabled Treasure Valley residents.  We coordinate two of the largest volunteer events in the Northwest – Paint The Town™ and Rake Up Boise™ – where we serve senior and disabled residents by painting, raking, and revitalizing their homes and yards.

3.  NHS helps empower youth. We will be implementing our Youth Engaged in Leadership and Learning (YELL) Program for refugee and immigrant 7th-12th graders in our apartment communities this summer. The program focuses on cultural integration, building cultural identity, and leadership skills through education, group and one-on-one discussions, and quarterly youth-lead service projects.

4.  NHS helps the environment.  We infuse “green” practices and materials throughout many of our programs.  Some of our approaches to conservation include:

  • Providing a guide to identifying an energy and water efficient home with a high indoor air quality in our Prepurchase Counseling Program
  • Incorporating green components into every property we rehabilitate in our Acquisition and Rehabilitation of Single Family Homes Program
  • Building homes that are Energy Star certified, and offering optional upgrade packages that include additional “green” features in our Single Family Home Construction Program
  • Dividing typical size parcels of land into efficient lots, and offering close-in property that encourages homebuyers to ride their bikes or walk to work in our Single Family Home Development Program

5.  NHS helps the Treasure Valley economy.  We revitalize homes and neighborhoods through our Acquisition and Rehabilitation of Single Family Homes Program and our community volunteer events, Paint The Town™ and Rake Up Boise™.  Updating rundown properties restores neighborhood pride and increases property values.  We also provide financial education, counseling, and lending to LMI families and individuals – improving fiscal awareness and responsibility within our community.
