NHS AmeriCorps VISTA Participates in Idaho@Play

In honor of Idaho AmeriCorps Week, May 3-10th, Neighborhood Housing Services AmeriCorps VISTA member, Emily Pohlman, joined 7 other members from around the valley last week to paint animal tracks and activity courts with kids from the Davis Park neighborhood for Idaho@Play.

According to the Serve Idaho website, Idaho@Play is a state-wide initiative which brings AmeriCorps members and community volunteers together to promote play as a way to combat childhood obesity.

On Wednesday, May 7th, 15-20 children along with the AmeriCorps volunteers, and two adult residents of NHS’ Davis Park Apartments painted the animal tracks, hopscotch and foursquare courts, as well as a wall in the park’s community center.  The volunteers also did some fun, educational activities with the kids such as identifying different kinds of animal scat.

The AmeriCorps volunteers would like to thank Ada County Highway District for donating the paint for the event.

NHS is a proud sponsor of the AmeriCorps VISTA program.  VISTA members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency – dedicating their time to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.  NHS currently has 2 VISTA members, and has committed to sponsoring 7 more within the next year.
