NeighborWorks Boise: Not Your Average Landlord

07/23/15 at 01:53 PM | by Jillian Hanes

Apartment hunting can be downright tricky for anyone. After spending hours searching websites, newspapers or community boards to find units in your area that are safe, close to everyday amenities, and that fit into your budget, you finally find 4-5 possibilities. Next, you take time out of your busy schedule to visit these apartments – trying to absorb all the details of each place within the 20 minutes it takes the landlord to show you around the complex. At the same time, you’re asking questions about neighbors and the lease policy. If you’re a really diligent renter, you may even write down the details, go online to see if there are any reviews from former tenants, or even come back and ask some of the current renters if their experience living there has been positive. This can be downright exhausting and stressful for the average renter, before the big move. Imagine how much more challenging this process was for the 978 refugees that arrived in Idaho this past year – many who don’t even speak English

A ceiling fan or a portable fan? (See bottom of the page for quiz results). And of course the winners in our meetings receive green prizes.

Our friend, Rita found joy in giving this year as she gave the gift of Home.

Why Does Home Matter?

06/23/14 at 05:17 PM | by Jillian Hanes

When someone mentions the word “home,” differing images of this place come to mind for each one of us. For some, it’s our childhood, and others it’s our current living situation. Whether these images of home are happy or painful, we know this is a place that greatly influences and affects nearly every major facet of our lives including health, education, success, public safety, and the local economy. For this reason, Neighborhood Housing Services believes that Home Matters. We have aligned our organization with this national movement – Home Matters® – that focuses on raising awareness and funds to make Home a reality for everyone. NHS is committed to helping Idahoans understand how stable homes are the key to thriving communities, and empowering them with tools and opportunities to work toward achieving a safe, sustainable place to live – changing many of their images of Home to a place of health and security.
