You may be familiar with our annual community volunteer events, Paint The Town™ and Rake Up Boise™, but did you know that Neighborhood Housing Services has an Acquisition and Rehabilitation of Single Family Homes Program too?
Neighborhood Housing Services is happy to acknowledge, Holly Green, our Loan Processor Assistant who joined the organization in April 2013.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has received a $20,000 grant from The Lightfoot Foundation to fund our Acquisition and Rehabilitation of single family homes program – an important sector of NHS’ full affordable housing continuum.
Neighborhood Housing Services is happy to welcome 3 new staff members to our organization. Bob Shepard, Director of Development; Evelina Bennett, Accountant; and Jillian Hanes, Grant Development Specialist have all joined NHS within the past 3 months.
NHS is happy to announce that we have broken ground on our first two single family lots in Garden City. The lots are in Bluestar Subdivision near the Boise River, greenbelt, and Veteran’s Memorial Park.
In December 2013, Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) and Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) held a Warm Clothing Drive for kids living at NHS Communities, including Davis Park, Stewart Avenue, Northwest Pointe and Gateway Crossing in Nampa.
Neighborhood Housing Services is a proud participant of the Avenues for Hope Housing Challenge again this year, a donation campaign provided by the Home Partnership Foundation. Housing organizations from around the state of Idaho will compete for challenge grant funds between December 10th to 31st. Grants are awarded based on the number of unique donors who contribute over $25 online during this time frame. There are also many other ways to achieve grants, including early bird, daily drawings and greatest weekly effort awards.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has recently committed to work towards the NeighborWorks America Green Organization designation. The designation recognizes NeighborWorks network members who incorporate healthy and sustainable principles into every facet of their operations and throughout their lines of business. As of this fall, NHS is considering green standards in its operations and single family construction plans and has already started to include green recommendations and materials for homeownership counseling participants and residents of its affordable housing properties.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) CEO, Joe Swenson, recently graduated from the NeighborWorks Achieving Excellence in Community Development program, sponsored in collaboration with Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The 18-month performance-driven program trains outstanding leaders and promotes innovation in affordable housing and community development.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has been notified that the U. S. Department of the Treasury's Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund selected NHS Lending Inc. for an award through the FY 2013 CDFI Program. The award of $600,000 provides substantial support to grow our program that offers mortgage loans to qualified low- to moderate income families and individuals. NHS Lending provides flexibility that is not available from conventional lenders, paving the way to homeownership for those who would otherwise not be able to buy a home.
On August 15, 2013, FHA HUD introduced guidelines for is “Back to Work” lending program that will open the doors to otherwise ineligible FHA borrowers.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has received a $7,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to fund the operations of its affordable housing services, which promote sustainable homeownership. For almost ten years, Bank of America has provided vital support to NHS programs, including Homebuyer Education, Foreclosure Prevention, Mortgage Lending and community revitalization events.
Neighborhood Housing Services is excited to have Marie Conway and Emily Pohlman joining our staff for one year VISTA assignments. The Americorps VISTA program is federally funded to provide capacity building support to nonprofit organizations working to eliminate poverty.
Paint The Town™ 2013 was a great success and Neighborhood Housing Services is excited to share the highlights of the great community impact this program has made in the Treasure Valley. On June 8th, 65 teams painted 58 homes, volunteering over 7200 hours in order to complete the revitalization projects.

NHS appreciates U.S. Bancorp Foundation for its continued commitment to the success of NHS programs and improving Idaho communities.
The Idaho Nonprofit Center is pleased to announce the successful launch of The Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative 2013. Generously supported by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, the program supports and celebrates nonprofit organizations in the Treasure Valley that are in growth phases and seeking tools and resources to help ensure the sustainability of their organizations and missions.
Nearly half of the NHS staff attended classes last week in Portland, Oregon. The Neighborworks Training Institutes holds trainings across the country 3 times per year. Portland's location was convenient for the Boise staff, previous locations for NTI's were Orlando and Cincinnati.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has received a $5,000 grant from Wells Fargo to support its NHS Homes Acquisition and Rehabilitation Program. NHS would like to thank Wells Fargo for its long standing commitment to NHS and its community services.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) would like to thank Idaho and the generous donors who participated in Idaho Gives on May 2, 2013. NHS participated in this one day, online giving campaign to support Paint The Town. A total of 74 donors donated $4,625 to buy buckets of paint for the valley-wide event, taking place June 8, 2013. The paint will be used to revitalize homes for senior or disabled neighbors throughout Southwest Idaho.
NHS Staff to Participate in NeighborWorks America Training Institute
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS), one of the hundreds of Idaho nonprofits participating in Idaho Gives on May 2, is teaming up with Texas Roadhouse to celebrate the special statewide day of giving.
The number of Idaho homes with foreclosure filings in March dropped by 8 percent from February, continuing a steady decrease. Idaho now ranks 21st in the country in foreclosure activity, with one out of every 1,203 houses undergoing some form of activity, according to RealtyTrac, a real estate data company.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) will participate in a state-wide giving day on May 2, 2013 called Idaho Gives. This online fundraising effort will raise over $500,000 for hundreds of Idaho nonprofit organizations in one day. From midnight -11:59pm a share of every dollar raised by Idaho nonprofits will be matched with funds from the Idaho Gives award pool. In addition, the top five organizations with the most unique donors will receive bonus grants.
Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) has been granted $58,750 from NeighborWorks America to support its community development and affordable housing initiatives in Idaho. NHS is one of two NeighborWorks affiliates in Idaho (also Pocatello), which receive operating grants from federal funds directly allocated to NeighborWorks by Congress. NeighborWorks also provides substantial training and resources to NHS throughout the year.
